Metals as fuel

Metal is a fuel that is easy to store and transport, and when burned, it produces an oxide that is sent back to produce metal.

Why are we doing this project?

During the transition to carbon-free energy, metals can be used for large scale energy storage. Energy is stored in metals during their production and released during their combustion (oxidation).

The tasks we solve

  • Icon development of effective methods for oxidation of metals
  • Icon development of effective methods for converting the enthalpy of metal oxidation reactions into useful energy (mechanical, electrical, thermal)

Results obtained

The world's first aluminum-fueled power plant
Hydrogen produced by oxidation of aluminum in water was tested in a 16 kW fuel cell stack with solid polymer electrolyte
A system for converting direct current from a fuel cell battery into alternating current for the consumer has been created
An automated system for monitoring and controlling the installation has been created and tested
The properties of the solid oxidation product of aluminum were studied
